Focused on the study and design of interactive computing systems that enable varied and complex human interactions
We are an interdisciplinary research group focused on the study and design of interactive computing systems that enable varied and complex human interactions. Our research spans three major areas, including entertainment computing (video games and related social technologies), human-centered Artificial Intelligence (AI), and systems in complex environments. By merging Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and cognitive engineering methods, we aim to engineer systems that serve both entertainment and productivity purposes, attuned to human requirements, skills, and constraints. Alongside our main focus, we rigorously explore the ethical and administrative aspects, marking a secondary yet vital area of our research. Through this approach, we strive to develop systems that are not only functionally superior but also ethically sound, user-centric, and administratively viable, contributing to the advancement of technology in harmony with human factors and societal values.

The Human-Centered Computing Group (HCCG) is looking for strong graduate student candidates who are eager to contribute to research in the areas highlighted on this website. Prospective applicants should first familiarize themselves with the specific research interests of the group and consider how their skills and experience can add value to these projects. When reaching out to Dr. Umair Rehman, candidates should include a CV or similar documentation and also provide a clear explanation of which particular project or area of research they are interested in. It is important to articulate how their experience and expertise align with the group's research goals and how they envision contributing to the advancement of these projects. This approach demonstrates a proactive understanding of the group's work and a clear vision of the applicant's potential role within the team.
Applicants from all backgrounds are welcome to apply to the Human-Centered Computing Group (HCCG), but they must meet the Western Computer Science admission requirements. In addition to these requirements, experience in human-computer interaction, human factors, user interface design, human-AI interaction, or game develeopment is necessary. Candidates should be capable of developing software prototypes independently and be proficient in at least one programming language, such as C# or Java. Moreover, individuals with an interest or minor in psychology, especially those with experience conducting studies with human participants, or with an interest or minor in design, are also encouraged to apply.
Yes, the Human-Centered Computing Group (HCCG) actively seeks undergraduate students from a variety of disciplines for various roles. Undergraduates have the opportunity to engage in research either through thesis work or as research assistants, providing valuable hands-on experience in the field of human-computer interaction.
